Infection

    Sinus infection (sinusitis).

Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses. Viral sinusitis usually resolves in 7–10 days; bacterial sinusitis is suspected when symptoms are severe or worsen after initial improvement.

    Quick answer

Sinus infections cause facial pressure, congestion, and thick nasal drainage. Most are viral and clear on their own — we prescribe antibiotics when symptoms are severe or persist beyond 10 days.
